The Turkey Pomodoro Sandwich from Hagermann’s Cafe in Utah is filled with turkey, Havarti, pepper jelly, marinara, cucumber, & greens. If you miss Hagermann’s Bakehouse Cafe, you will love this sandwich! It’s a unique combination of ingredients but trust me, they taste great together.

The Turkey Pomodoro was one of the best things on the Hagermann’s menu and one of our all-time favorite sandwiches. (And we love sandwiches! See my other Sandwich recipes here.) When we lived in Utah, we used to frequent this little cafe (one downtown and one in Draper) called Hagermann’s Bakehouse Cafe. They had delicious sandwiches and desserts – we loved most everything we tried on the menu, but we kept coming back for this sandwich. Sadly, the cafe has sinced closed. But we still talk about this sandwich!

The sandwich is a unique combination of ingredients but they work really well together. A bright roasted marinara sauce (Hagermann’s used slow roasted tomatoes, but I’m using marinara to simplify), with creamy Havarti cheese layered on top of turkey, fresh cucumbers, greens, and a jalapeno pepper jelly all on a toasted hoagie or French bread. The pepper jelly is sweet with a little spice and acts as the perfect balance and contrast to the other savory ingredients. I can say it honestly is a joy to eat this sandwich. Be sure to toast your bread for a warm and filling sandwich.

I was worried if I’d be able to find the jalapeno pepper jelly, but it was easy to find at my local Kroger location (Fred Meyer here in Oregon). This Tabasco brand Jalapeno Pepper Jelly is what I used. But I’m sure any brand would work – it is a combination of sweet with a tiny but of spice. Nothing overpowering but full of flavor.

What is Pomodoro?

Pomodoro is an Italian word for tomato. Pomodoro sauce is typically thicker than other tomato-based sauces and includes a few other ingredients that set it apart as a sauce. In general, Pomodoro sauce is usually thicker than marinara sauce, because chefs use crushed tomatoes as the base and reduce it down to be a thicker consistency.

The original Hagermann’s Turkey Pomodoro sandwich in their cafe had a slow roasted tomato puree instead of marinara sauce. To simplify the recipe, I’m using a marinara sauce. As long as you use a good quality thick marinara sauce, it will taste delicious. This is one recipe where the marinara sauce you use will matter!

These are my 3 favorite marinara sauces: Mezzetta, Rao’s, and Victoria.
