M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies

One of my favorite ways to make an easy but festive treat for new seasons or holidays is to add colorful, holiday themed M&Ms to my Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Recently on my Instagram Stories I shared a couple videos to show how I add the M&Ms to the top of the scooped cookie dough balls. Basically you mix in the chocolate chips in the stand mixer, then scoop out your cookie dough. Then you place, by hand, a couple M&Ms on the top of each scooped dough ball. This prevents your M&Ms from getting all blended up in the dough. It also helps them look nice on top.

Basically I make the chocolate chip cookie dough, using 3/4 of the chocolate chips (1.5 cups). Then I scoop the dough out into balls, and press M&Ms onto the scooped dough balls. Then I freeze the dough and bake.

The M&Ms were only pressed onto the top, so they will perfectly and evenly top the cookies once they bake and spread.

M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 7 minutes
Freezing Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. butter softened
  • 3/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. flour
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1.5 c. chocolate chips
  • M&M Candies (I use about 4-5 on the top of each)

Instructions

  • Cream butter and sugars in stand mixer for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add egg and vanilla and keep beating for 1 min.
  • Meanwhile in a separate bowl mix flour, salt, and baking soda.
  • Slowly add dry mixture to wet mixture and cream. Then add the chocolate chips and mix quickly until incorporated.
  • Using a cookie scoop (2-3 tbsp. works best), scoop dough onto cookie sheet. Top each scooped ball of dough with 4-5 M&Ms.
Freeze cookie sheet with dough on it for 30 minutes or longer until dough is hard and frozen!
  • Remove dough from freezer. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicon baking mat. Place frozen balls on it, evenly spaced (8-12 per sheet works great).
  • Bake in preheated 375 degrees for 7-9 minutes, until tops are lightly browning. Because the dough was frozen the tops may look rounded (top is brown, inside is still gooey). Once tops are light brown, remove from oven and transfer pan to top of stove to cool. Let cool on cookie sheet for 10 minutes before eating or transferring.
