Flank Steak Beef and Broccoli is made with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, & brown sugar – it’s sweet & savory with a delicious sauce. You will love how easy this recipe is to throw together; just add some white rice and you’ve got a filling and healthy meal that everyone in your family will love.

Last month I was asked to teach a group of middle schoolers about being a food blogger, at my son’s middle school career day. They had great questions about my job, but one question several of them asked was, “If you could choose only one style of food to eat for the rest of your life, what would you choose?” And I quickly said: Asian food! Perhaps it was cheating a little to give that answer because there are so many kinds of Asian food, but I crave Asian food almost every single day. I love the complexity of flavors, the mix of lots of fresh veggies with really well seasoned meats, all the spices and umami flavors, and the complement of rice or noodles to many of the dishes. (Click here to see all my Asian-inspired recipes.)

If you’re looking for a quick Asian-style weeknight dinner that’s full of flavor and comes together easily, this Flank Steak Beef and Broccoli is it. Tender slices of flank steak are cooked with fresh broccoli in a sweet and savory sauce made from garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, and brown sugar. Served over white rice, this dish is filling, satisfying, and always a hit with the whole family.

It has all takeout-style flavor, but with simple ingredients you can feel good about, and it comes together in under 30 minutes.

What Makes This Flank Steak Beef and Broccoli So Good:

  • Flank steak cooks quickly and stays tender when sliced thin across the grain.
  • Garlic and ginger bring depth and warmth to the sauce.
  • Soy sauce + sesame oil add rich umami flavor.
  • A touch of brown sugar balances it all with just the right amount of sweetness.
  • Fresh broccoli adds texture, color, and nutrition to the dish.
  • Corn starch thickens the sauce, making it rich, sticky, and delicious.

Ingredients

Sauce Ingredients

  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons minced ginger
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch

Beef and Broccoli Ingredients

  • 1 -2 lbs. flank steak, sliced thinly against the grain
  • 5-7 heads fresh broccoli, florets cut off
  • oil for cooking
  • water for cooking
  • sesame seeds for garnish
  • cooked white rice (to serve with) (I use Jasmine Rice)

Instructions

Rice and Sauce

  • Start by making the rice, so it's ready when the beef and broccoli are done. Make rice according to package instructions, and let it cook/steam while you're preparing the beef and broccoli.
  • Next, prepare the sauce. First, to a medium-sized bowl, add all the sauce ingredients minus the water and corn starch.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the warm water and corn starch. Slowly add mixture to the sauce, and whisk it all well together. Set aside.

Beef and Broccoli

  • Get two pans ready for cooking the beef and the broccoli. I like to cook them separately so they cook evenly.
  • In a very large saucepan or wok over medium-high heat, add 2 tablespoons of oil and then add the sliced flank steak. Stir well to coat with oil and cook until meat is slightly browned and cook through.
  • In a separate saute pan, add 1 tablespoon of oil and the broccoli florets. Add 1-2 cups of water and cover to steam broccoli (if you'd like the broccoli softer, add more water, if you'd like it more pan-seared, add less water).
  • Once beef is cooked through, whisk the sauce well and add to the pan with the beef. Stir well and cook until sauce bubbles and thickens. Once sauce is thickened, add in broccoli. Stir to coat. Make sure it is all evenly coated.
  • Serve by spooning the beef and broccoli over warm rice. Then top with sesame seeds if desired.
    Enjoy!
