These Easy Steel Cut Oats with Berries are filled with gut healthy prebiotics and are a filling and healthy way to start your day.

This is the gut friendly breakfast I’ve been eating almost every day since I received my test results for poor gut health… It’s delicious and filled with steel cut oats which have very good prebiotics and are full of whole food soluble fiber for your gut. Top it with almond milk and blueberries – which are also great for gut health and have 4 times the recommended amount of daily disease-fighting antioxidants in just one cup!

All you need for this easy breakfast:

  • steel cut oats
  • almond milk
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • berries
  • nut butter, optional

I make a very small portion of this each day because steel cut oats, while very healthy for you, are also heavy on the carbohydrates. But what’s amazing is how full a small portion can make you – it gets me through a morning workout and all the way to lunchtime. It’s such a satisfying way to start the day.

Steel cut oats have been one of the only carbs I can have so I savor them.

After struggling with some gut health issues for the past year, I got a gut biome test with my doctor (this is the one I used through my doctor, and she helped me go over each of the results). I actually thought Biohm did a great job with making the test easy (not sponsored! just a great process) and my results were processed quickly – if you do the test, be sure the go over the results with your doctor.

After getting the results and scoring poor gut health (some of the issues are genetic, some linked to my anti-anxiety medicine), I’ve started on a regimen with my doctor to get as many gut-friendly foods into my system as possible (in addition to lots of gut health supplements she gave me). I haven’t created a specific food plan yet, but for the time being I’m staying away from all flours and sugars, and trying to eat from the most gut-friendly and anti-inflammatory foods. Soon I’ll be creating a list of all those for you. I’ve been doing a lot of research every day about the best gut health foods, and I’m starting to compile them in categories.

It’s a small amount but very filling.

Easiest gut friendly breakfast. Cook the steel cut oats in water. Top with cinnamon and nutmeg and a little almond milk. Then add a handful of fresh blueberries. Enjoy!
