The Ultimate BLT with Homemade Buttermilk Ranch has crispy thick bacon, fresh tomatoes, avocado, creamy melted cheddar, & the best homemade ranch.

If you’re looking for a sandwich that’s equal parts fresh, crispy, creamy, and satisfying, this is it. This really is the Ultimate BLT – my son said it was the best sandwich he’d ever had in his life! I made it twice in two weeks and he said the same thing the second week we had it as well!! (You know we love Sandwiches and Burgers in our house – I think they might be a food group at this point.)

This BLT takes the classic sandwich up several notches with thick, crispy bacon, sharp cheddar cheese, juicy tomatoes, creamy avocado, and the most flavorful homemade ranch you’ve ever had. Oh, and did I mention it’s all layered on French bread?
The Secret Is in the Homemade Buttermilk Ranch
Let’s start with the star of the show: the homemade buttermilk ranch. This makes the entire sandwich and elevates the entire BLT experience.
Once you make ranch from scratch, you’ll never want to go back to the bottled stuff again. It’s tangy, herby, creamy, and absolutely packed with flavor. The best part is, it’s really easy to make.

Why You’ll Love The Ultimate BLT with Homemade Buttermilk Ranch:
- Crispy thick-cut bacon: salty and perfectly crunchy
- Sharp cheddar cheese: creamy and savory – the perfect complement to the bacon
- Juicy tomatoes: the fresher the better (go for heirlooms or vine-ripened!)
- Creamy avocado: it just makes everything better
- Homemade buttermilk ranch: lots of herbs + tangy buttermilk = magic
- French bread: soft inside with just the right amount of lightly-toasted crisp
It’s simple, but each ingredient brings so much flavor and texture. And when it all comes together, it’s sandwich perfection.

Tips for Building the Perfect BLT:
- Toast your bread just slightly so it holds up to the ranch and tomatoes without getting soggy.
- Use thick-cut bacon and cook it until it’s crispy, but not crumbly.
- Season your tomatoes with a little salt – this brings out their juiciness and flavor.
- Add lettuce if you like – but honestly, with avocado and ranch, you don’t actually need it.
Ultimate BLT with Homemade Buttermilk Ranch

Ingredients
Homemade Buttermilk Ranch
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons dried chives
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried dill
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt (like Lawry's)
- 1/8 teaspoon dry mustard powder
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Sandwich Ingredients
- 1 loaf soft rustic bread (I like the Italian Round or French Bread from La Brea Bakery – in the grocery bakery area)
- sharp white cheddar cheese, sliced
- green leaf or romaine lettuce
- sliced tomatoes (vine-ripened or heirloom)
- sliced avocado
- 1 lb. thick-cut bacon, cooked until crispy
- salt (I like flake sea salt for this sandwich if you have it)
- pepper
Instructions
Homemade Buttermilk Ranch
- To make, simply blend all the ingredients in a high-speed blender or food processor until smooth.
- Pour into an airtight container (I like to use a glass jar with a lid), and keep in the fridge until chilled. Tastes best when chilled for at least 1 hour.
- We LOVE this dressing and it tastes great stored for up to a week in the fridge, in an airtight container.
Sandwich Assembly
- Once you have the bacon cooked, ranch dressing made, and all the ingredients sliced, preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Place slices of bread onto a baking sheet, and add a slice of cheese to each piece of bread.
- Bake – just slightly – in preheated oven for 3-5 minutes until cheese is just melted. If you bake too long the bread can get too crispy and hurts the roof of your mouth to bite into! You want the bread toasted just enough to not let the ranch seep into it, and long enough to melt the cheese.
- Once cheese is melted, begin assembling sandwich. Layer each sandwich with lettuce, tomato, bacon, avocado, and lots of the homemade ranch.Slice in half and enjoy!!
Make It a Meal
This sandwich is filling on its own, especially as a summer dinner! But it also pairs well with a side salad, sweet corn, or even just some kettle chips. Just don’t skip the ranch.
