Chocolate Cake

Need the perfect every time, most delicious fudge frosting topped best ever moist chocolate cake? Look no further. This has been my go-to for years. Best part is it’s a doctored up cake mix. Tastes homemade with a neverfail moist texture of a mix.

Several years ago a friend sent me a photo of a recipe card from her grandma – for the best ever doctored up cake recipe. It’s literally failproof. I’ve made it too many times to count with countless flavor variations and it honestly ALWAYS turns out great. Not to mention it’s insanely easy. So easy your kids could do it.

Back to the chocolate. The first flavor she made this recipe with was chocolate – but it has a unique twist – it starts with a yellow cake mix. Yep you read that right – yellow. Then you add in a pack of dry powdered chocolate pudding and it turns the cake this sweet but light chocolatey flavor. It’s honestly delicious even without frosting.

But the frosting is also a favorite of mine. I started working on developing a perfect chocolate frosting years ago – this is the recipe I came up with when we were first married and it’s been my go-to chocolate frosting ever since. You need this in your arsenal! It’s’ great for cakes, brownies, and even frosted cookies.

I’ve included instructions for baking this cake in a 9×13 pan, or a bundt pan, or two round layer pans. If you are making a layer cake, I’d double the frosting amount.
