Baking Powder Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 12 tbsp. butter, softened (1 1/2 sticks // 3/4 c.)
  • 1 c. whole milk / cream / or buttermilk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 420°F with a rack in the middle . Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. No need to spray pan.
  • Mix together flour, salt, baking powder, & sugar.
Using a pastry cutter or your hands, work butter into mixture until it is an evenly crumbly mixture.
  • Drizzle the milk or cream over mixture. Mix with your hands until it comes together. If it's too dry add a little more milk or cream.
  • Place the dough on a lightly floured work surface. Pat it into a rough rectangle about 1" thick. Fold it into thirds like a letter and roll gently with a floured rolling pin until the dough is 3/4" thick again.
  • Cut the dough into circles with a wide glass or biscuit cutter (2 - 3 inch cutter).
Place the biscuits bottom side up on your prepared baking sheet, for smooth tops. Brush the biscuits with milk, to enhance browning.
  • Bake the biscuits for 12-14 minutes, until they're lightly browned. Remove them from the oven, and serve warm.
